What About a SHOOTOUT AT WADALA!!!

Another thriller about cops and goons set in the Mumbai underworld? Yes, pretty much so. But Shootout at Wadala is more than just a series of action scenes strung together with the purpose of revealing the many dangers that lurk in mafia land.

As far as the plot goes, the film does not proffer much that has not been seen before. But director Sanjay Gupta brings a degree of flair and finesse to the table and gives the hackneyed and violent story a sustained edge that is difficult to ignore.

Shootout at Wadala is a hyper-dramatized and stylized cinematic version of what is essentially a journalistic account (taken from S Hussain Zaidi’s book Dongri to Dubai) of the rise and fall of a Mumbai mafia don in the 1970s and 1980s.

With many dates, ranging from the 1970s all the way to January 1982, thrown into the narrative to create the film’s historical context, Shootout at Wadala freely fictionalizes details drawn from the police files.

The film scores on two fronts – the niftily choreographed action sequences and the sharply written dialogues (Milan Milap Zaveri). But in both respects, a tendency to err on the side of excess mars the overall impact.

The action, although filmed in a manner that is raw and authentic, tends to get a touch monotonous after the first few set pieces have done their bit.

The dialogues are hard-hitting in parts, but occasionally go overboard with the cuss words. Expletives have really lost their ability to shock – in Shootout at Wadala they raise a few laughs.

The laboured comedy is out of place in a two-and-a-half-hour film replete with high-voltage action sequences interspersed with dramatic confrontation scenes that keep it on the boil all the way through.

The well-calibrated and explosive climax provides a fitting finale to the blood-soaked crime drama and makes up for some of the more slipshod portions.

Shootout at Wadala is enlivened by a clutch of solid performances. At one end are the men in uniform (Anil Kapoor, Mahesh Manjrekar, Ronit Roy), at the other the gangsters (John Abraham, Manoj Bajpayee, Sonu Sood, Tusshar Kapoor).

A sense of déjà vu is inevitable. Yet Shootout at Wadala delivers many an ace in terms of style. Premises of a jail, congested bylanes, seedy gangland hideouts, and sordid brothels and police vans are Sanjay Gupta’s favourite sites and they serve to enhance the noir feel of the film.

This is Gupta’s first film in eight years – his last directorial outing was the derivative dark thriller Zinda – and his storytelling methods are still as dry as gunpowder.

Shootout at Wadala has the makings of a blockbuster, but unlike many Mumbai films that are part of the 100-crore club, it has a logical core that, despite relying on many of the conventions of commercial Hindi cinema, does not degenerate into outright pulp.

If there is a major weakness in the film, it must be the fact that John Abraham plays the central character and is called upon to carry the venture on his shoulders. He is in virtually every frame of Shootout at Wadala.

He plays Manya Surve, a college student who, after a murder rap and an escape from prison, rose to challenge the dominant underworld gang of the era and was eventually killed in a police encounter, the first-ever recorded in the city’s crime history.

Abraham goes all out as a tough-as-nails criminal (warding off rivals and cops alike) and a genteel lover (wooing, losing and reclaiming Kangana Ranaut), but the pressures of the histrionic range that he must traverse leave him groping for the right emotive chords at times.

Mercifully, the cast of Shootout at Wadala has a couple of seasoned actors who never seem to falter – Anil Kapoor (ACP Afaaque Bhagran, Manya’s principal tormentor) and Manoj Bajpayee (Zubair Imtiaz Haskar, a character modelled on Dawood Ibrahim).

Add to that the presence of Sonu Sood (Zubair’s younger brother, Dilawar), who, too, is in fine fettle, and you have a drama that has the acting firepower to blast its way through trouble.

Thrills of the cheaper variety are provided by not one, not two, but three item girls – Priyanka Chopra (Babli badmaash), Sunny Leone (Laila) and Sophie Chaudhry (Aala re aala).

These raunchy numbers are fillers unabashedly designed to provide eye candy relief from all the virility on show and, therefore, add no real intrinsic value to the film. But they do not get on the nerves quite in the manner that item numbers tend to do.

Shootout at Wadala captures the grit and grime of the mean streets to perfection thanks to the classy camerawork of DOP Sameer Arya and additional DOP Sanjay F. Gupta.

The film is generally entertaining without attaining the sort of innate quality that could attract favourable comparisons with Ram Gopal Varma’s Satya and Company or Vidhu Vinod Chopra’s Parinda. But that could hardly be a reason to write off the film.

Tributes for the legend have been pouring in from across the world as former and current players heaped praises on Tendulkar.
If Tendulkar's former captain and opening partner Sourav Ganguly described him as the "greatest cricketer he has ever seen", then former Australian opener Mathew Hayden called him the "Indian Don Bradman".

Dilshan says he hopes that Sachin plays more IPL and international matches to inspire the youngsters.\

Clarke said Sachin's uniqueness was his ability to keep the intensity going even after 24 years of playing international cricket.

Amul butter has come out with a special cartoon for the special occasion where the legend has been described as "4 X Ten dulkar" depicting his age as a wish below reads "Happy Butterday Sachin".
To mark the occasion, a life-sized wax figure of the Indian batsman was unveiled at the Sydney Cricket Ground earlier in the week. The statue will later be displayed at Sydney's Madame Tussauds wax museum.

Sachin Tendulkar will celebrate his 40th birthday today as the City of Joy is all set to throw a huge party for the God of Cricket.

The Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB) has ordered a special 40-pound cake for Tendulkar to celebrate his 40th birthday at the iconic Eden Gardens when Sachin’s Mumbai Indians take on Kolkata Knight Riders in their IPL match.

A special Hyderabadi chef has been put in charge to make the 40-lb cake which will have 40 different expressions of Tendulkar embedded on it. CAB has planned to make it a low key affair in the Mumbai Indians dressing room.

The Hyderabadi chef who makes the cake said that 40kg was no big deal as they had made bigger cakes than Sachin’s 40th birthday cake but what was really big was it is being made for the iconic hero of the country. The chef who has earlier made cakes for the great cricket hero of Kolkata Sourav Ganguly, added they were really proud of making the cake.

A special program too has been arranged by the Mumbai Indians team way ahead of the match, during the morning hours. Tendulkar would cut a cake in front of the media and address the gathering, he added.

Tendulkar’s wife Anjali will join him along with team owner Nita Ambani for more celebrations.

As the iconic cricket is nearing his 40th birthday, wishes are reaching him from various corners.

Tendulkar savours 40th birthday gift

Another honour comes Sachin Tendulkar’s way. This time, on the cusp of his 40th birthday to be celebrated on Wednesday.
On Saturday, cricket fans at the Sydney Cricket Ground in Australia will see the unveiling of Tendulkar’s waxwork courtesy Madame Tussauds in Sydney.
The waxwork which is expected to be a replica of the one in London, will later be displayed in the museum at scenic Darling Harbour, near the Sydney Aquarium.
Members of the famous Swami Army have been invited to the official unveiling at the SCG. In an email communication, members of the support group have been told that this is a “once in a lifetime opportunity to take your photo with the life size figure of the greatest Indian cricketer ever.”

Sachin Tendulkar alongside a bust of Sir Donald Bradman before his last one-day international at the SCG in 2012.

Tendulkar’s waxwork will be displayed alongside statues of Sir Don Bradman and Shane Warne. The Mumbai master was delighted to receive another Bradman-related honour. To top it, this has come close to his 40th birthday (April 24). “It is,” Tendulkar said when asked whether the honour was a fine birthday gift. “It is nice that it coincides with my birthday. It’s a wonderful way to start,” he said.
To be placed alongside Bradman in the museum thrilled him. “Anything to do with Sir Don is always an honour. I’m really happy and excited,” he said, admitting that memories of the 1998 trip to Bradman’s residence in Adelaide to wish the great man on his 90th birthday keep coming back. “That was a special experience for me; the highlight of my life. I remember catching up with Warnie some time after that trip and speaking about the visit,” he said.
The fact that the statue will be displayed in a city that houses his favourite overseas arena — the Sydney Cricket Ground — is special too

Gony leads Kings XI's twilight robbery

Kolkata Knight Riders dominated possession for about 80% of the match, but conceded goals in the last few minutes of either half. Playing his first match of this IPL, Manpreet Gony won Kings XI Punjab this game out of nowhere. The hosts were dead and buried reeling under a Sunil Narine hat-trick when Gony walked out to bat, but his 18-ball 42 gave Kings XI a target to bowl to. Still, Gautam Gambhir and Eoin Morgan were cruising home when Gony came back for his second spell, but those three overs for six runs - two of them wides - and the wicket of Gambhir caused enough panic for Knight Riders to crumble.

Forget the unfathomable - in Twenty20 - spin of Sunil Narine and Sachithra Senanayake, which got Knight Riders the four big wickets of Kings XI's overseas batsmen for just 13 runs off 15 balls, it was the Indian domestic batsmen's ineptitude against the bouncer that proved to be the decider. Kings XI lost four of their batsmen to balls pitched short, but crucially, Knight Riders' Manoj Tiwary and Yusuf Pathan were deers in headlights when confronted with accurate bouncers.

When Tiwary came out to bat at the fall of Gambhir for a third straight half-century, Knight Riders needed only 52 off 41 with seven wickets in hand. Gony bounced him again and again, and it got uglier and uglier for Tiwary as he faced seven balls for one run, slogged at more than half of them, and left Knight Riders stuck. Yusuf wasn't much better, except that he lasted longer, and managed a top edge over the keeper in his 13 off 16.

The crucial difference between the two innings was that Mandeep Singh and Manan Vohra of Kings XI had scored some runs - Mandeep managed a crucial 41 - before they were bounced. And when bounced, they didn't waste balls, and got out. Tiwary and Yusuf couldn't get out, and suddenly Knight Riders needed 30 off the last two overs. The problem for Kings XI was that they had run out of the overs from Azhar Mahmood, who took three wickets including that of Jacques Kallis and Morgan
